Magnetostrictive Level Gauge for Chemical Industry

Magnetostrictive level gauges are widely used in the chemical industry because they provide reliable, continuous level measurement in demanding tanks and process vessels. The technology uses a magnetostrictive waveguide and a float with embedded magnets. When the float moves with the liquid surface, the magnetic field interacts with a current pulse in the waveguide, producing a precise position signal. This design has no moving mechanical linkages in the sensing element, so wear is low and maintenance needs are reduced. Chemical plants often handle corrosive, toxic, flammable, or high-temperature liquids. A magnetostrictive level gauge can be supplied with corrosion-resistant wetted materials such as 316L stainless steel, PTFE, or Hastelloy, and with explosion-proof housings for hazardous areas. It offers high accuracy, repeatability, and stable output for inventory control, batch dosing, and overfill protection. Because the sensor can measure both liquid level and interface level when equipped with multiple floats, it is useful in separation tanks and chemical reactors. Proper installation is important. The probe should be mounted vertically, avoid turbulence and foam, and match the float density to the process liquid. Regular calibration and inspection of seals and floats help ensure long-term performance. With robust construction and precise measurement, magnetostrictive level gauges support safer and more efficient chemical production. This supports safe, efficient chemical tank farms.
