A Graybus cable is a specialized sensor cable that uses Gray code for absolute positioning of industrial equipment. It contains multiple conductive tracks arranged in Gray code. These insulated tracks run along the travel path. A mobile reader head, or antenna, moves close to the cable without touching it.
It works by electromagnetic coupling and Gray code decoding. An oscillator sends high-frequency signals through the conductors. As the antenna passes different sections, it couples with the field from active tracks. Because the pattern follows Gray code, each position gives a unique binary combination where only one bit changes between steps. This reduces errors during fast movement or vibration.

The antenna detects the signal and sends it to a decoder. The decoder converts Gray code into binary and then a position value. The controller compares it with preset coordinates to control motors, brakes, or alarms. Some systems use multiplexing so many tracks can be read over long distances.
Advantages include non-contact measurement, absolute positioning without homing, high repeatability, and resistance to dust, oil, moisture, and electromagnetic interference. Graybus cables are used in cranes, stackers, reclaimers, monorails, and automated warehouses. By turning a cable into a coded position scale, the system delivers durable feedback for harsh industrial environments. The result is accurate, maintenance-free position feedback. It is reliable in dusty and wet areas.
