Field Application of Electromagnetic Ultrasonic Thickness Probe

Electromagnetic ultrasonic thickness probes (EMAT) are increasingly used in field inspection because they generate ultrasonic waves directly in conductive or ferromagnetic materials without a couplant. This makes measurement faster and more reliable on rough, coated, or hot surfaces. In pipelines, technicians scan bends, welds, and corroded areas to track wall loss. EMAT probes tolerate scale and paint, reducing surface preparation. For storage tanks and pressure vessels, they support online thickness monitoring at high temperatures. In boilers and heat exchangers, the probe can inspect from one side and help detect erosion, corrosion, and pitting. Offshore and buried pipeline applications benefit from non-contact operation and stable coupling. When integrated with portable instruments or automated scanners, the probe provides repeatable data for asset integrity teams. Field users should consider lift-off, material conductivity, temperature, and probe design. Correct calibration on reference blocks and careful signal interpretation are essential. With proper settings, electromagnetic ultrasonic thickness probes improve safety, reduce downtime, and extend service life of critical equipment. For refinery piping and offshore risers, the method supports inspection in limited-access areas. It also helps monitor corrosion under insulation, although signal setup must be adjusted for each material and geometry. Regular training ensures reliable readings in challenging field environments.
