High-temperature crane and trolley positioning is critical in steel mills, foundries, and glass plants. Radiant heat, molten metal, and thermal expansion can disrupt standard sensors and motion control. Accurate positioning keeps ladles, hooks, and tongs aligned, reduces cycle time, and protects workers and equipment.
A reliable system combines heat-resistant hardware with intelligent control. Absolute encoders, laser sensors, magnetostrictive transducers, and RFID tags can be shielded for high ambient temperatures. Water-cooled or air-purged enclosures, thermal barriers, and remote mounting keep electronics within safe limits. For trolley positioning, rail-mounted code plates, barcode strips, and robust proximity arrays provide repeatable feedback when visibility is poor.
Redundancy is essential. Dual encoders, redundant PLC channels, and cross-checking algorithms detect drift or sensor loss before dangerous misposition occurs. Anti-sway control and closed-loop drives adjust acceleration and braking to stop the trolley smoothly. Calibration must account for thermal expansion of the bridge and runway, because a crane accurate at ambient temperature may shift several millimeters when heated.

Modern automation uses wireless or optical links and condition monitoring. By matching sensors, cooling, redundancy, and control logic to the heat profile, high-temperature crane and trolley positioning can achieve millimeter-level accuracy and long service life in demanding industrial settings.
