Electromagnetic Flowmeter

An electromagnetic flowmeter measures the flow of conductive liquids using Faraday's law of induction. As fluid moves through a magnetic field, a voltage is generated. This voltage is proportional to flow velocity, so the meter provides accurate readings. With no moving parts, it causes no pressure loss and needs little maintenance.

These meters are common in water treatment, chemicals, food and beverage, mining, pulp and paper, and wastewater. They handle clean liquids, slurries, and aggressive media when the correct liner and electrode materials are chosen. Typical liners include PTFE, PFA, rubber, and ceramic.

Correct installation is important. Keep the pipe full, allow enough straight pipe upstream and downstream, and ground the sensor well. Avoid air bubbles, solid buildup, and strong vibration. Regular calibration and electrode cleaning help maintain accuracy.

Benefits include high accuracy, a wide turndown ratio, bi-directional measurement, and compatibility with many conductive fluids. It cannot measure gases, steam, pure water, or low-conductivity oils. Most models require conductivity above 5 uS/cm.

When selecting an electromagnetic flowmeter, check pipe size, flow range, temperature, pressure, conductivity, and process connection. Outputs often include 4-20 mA, pulse, HART, Modbus, and Profibus. A suitable model improves process control, reduces downtime, and supports efficient resource management. Proper installation and maintenance ensure reliable data for years.
