Crane waterproof magnetostrictive displacement sensors provide reliable absolute position feedback in harsh lifting environments. Their core is a magnetostrictive waveguide sealed inside a rugged, waterproof housing. A permanent position magnet is mounted on the moving crane part, such as the hoist carriage or boom, and slides along the sensor rod without physical contact.
When the sensor electronics send a short current pulse through the waveguide, the pulse creates a circular magnetic field. At the magnet's position, this field interacts with the magnet's axial field and generates a torsional strain wave in the waveguide due to the magnetostrictive effect. This mechanical wave travels back to a pickup coil at a known speed.
The electronics measure the time between pulse launch and wave detection. Because the wave speed is stable, the time difference is proportional to the distance from the pickup to the magnet. The sensor converts this timing into an absolute displacement value, so position is retained after power loss and no reference run is needed.
Waterproof sealing, pressure-resistant connectors, and corrosion-resistant materials protect the waveguide and electronics from rain, washdown, dust, vibration, and temperature swings. This makes the sensor suitable for crane boom extension, trolley travel, hoist height, and load positioning, supporting safe control, overload protection, and automation. The result is stable, repeatable feedback for demanding crane duties.
