Electromagnetic flowmeters measure conductive liquids accurately, but only when they are installed correctly. Choose a location where the pipe remains full and the flow profile is stable. Keep the sensor away from pumps, valves, elbows, and other fittings that cause turbulence. Usually allow at least five pipe diameters upstream and three downstream. Longer straight runs may be needed after severe disturbances.
Mount the sensor so the flow arrow matches the actual direction. In horizontal pipes, place the electrodes horizontally or slightly below horizontal. This avoids air bubbles at the top and sediment at the bottom. In vertical pipes, upward flow is preferred to keep the pipe full. Avoid the highest point where air collects and the lowest point where sludge settles.
Grounding is essential. The sensor, liquid, and pipe must share a stable reference potential. Use dedicated ground wires and follow the manufacturer's instructions. Do not use the power cable ground unless it is approved. Keep signal cables away from motors, transformers, and variable-frequency drives. Use shielded cables and connect the shield as specified.
Install gaskets correctly and tighten flange bolts evenly. After installation, verify zero flow in a full, static pipe. Then test at normal flow and check the converter output. Proper installation protects accuracy, stability, and service life. For best results, confirm that the pipe is completely full during zero adjustment. Keep records for future maintenance.
