In hazardous industrial sites, accurate position feedback must not compromise safety. An intrinsically safe explosion-proof magnetostrictive displacement sensor combines precise absolute measurement with certified protection for explosive atmospheres. Its core is a magnetostrictive waveguide. A current pulse travels along the wire, interacts with a movable magnet's field, and generates a torsional strain pulse. The sensor measures the time between pulse launch and echo, then converts it into linear displacement. Because magnet and waveguide never touch, wear is minimal and service life is long. The output is absolute, so power loss does not erase the value.
For explosive environments, the sensor uses intrinsic safety. Circuits limit voltage, current, and energy below ignition thresholds, preventing sparks or hot surfaces that could ignite flammable gas, vapor, or dust. Models may meet ATEX and IECEx standards for Zone 0, Zone 1, or mining. A rugged stainless steel or flameproof housing resists moisture, corrosion, shock, and electromagnetic interference.
