Intrinsically Safe Explosion-proof Pressure Sensor Selection

Selecting an intrinsically safe explosion-proof pressure sensor starts with hazardous area classification. Confirm the zone, gas group, temperature class, and protection concept before comparing models. The sensor must carry valid intrinsic safety certification and match the associated barrier or galvanic isolator. Check entity parameters such as Ui, Ii, Pi, Ci, and Li against the isolated circuit; mismatches can invalidate the safety system. Define process conditions: pressure range, overload capacity, burst pressure, accuracy, stability, and response time. Choose piezoresistive, capacitive, or strain-gauge technology based on media compatibility, temperature, and vibration. Wetted materials must resist corrosion, while housing and cable entry must suit washdown, dust, humidity, and impact. Select 4–20 mA, HART, RS485, or another supported signal. For hazardous areas, prefer low-power designs and shielded, correctly terminated cables. Verify ingress protection, ambient temperature, and orientation. Keep cable runs away from high-current equipment and follow grounding rules. Review certificates, ATEX/IECEx markings, calibration reports, and maintenance access. Document entity parameters, calibration records, and installation checks for traceability. Consider spare parts, lead time, and supplier experience. Plan maintenance early. A sensor must match the process, hazardous area, and safety circuit—not price alone. This disciplined selection reduces risk and improves long-term reliability.
